Welcome

Hello and welcome to Sam's cancer diary.

My name is Mark, most of you reading this will know me already but for those of you who don't I am a good friend of Sam Barnes and have know him for over 15 years. Yes sadly it is true that Sam has cancer. The details of which I will describe later, but for now I wish to declare my reasons for writing about his life in such a public way.

To put it simply Sam has a lot of friends.

A lot of friends who care deeply about his condition and wish to follow his progress and offer him support along the way.

Not a surprise I imagine to any of you. I am sure you can appreciate, if you took a moment to consider, the sheer amount of communication it would take to keep you all informed of his progress and to be able to relay your messages of support. Simply Sam does not have the energy to reply to you all individually, his energy must be focused on repairing his body.

So, yes the geek in me had to get a little IT on you all, I hope for any of you less comfortable in this arena it will be a pleasant experience, and set up this blog to provide you with regular updates on his health and allow you to share your thoughts with him. You can do both here. I will pass on all messages for him to read as his treatment continues. As Sam's condition improves I expect that he will wish to reply in kind to his friends and keep you updated himself. Until then I will do my best to keep you all informed of his progress.

Considering such heavy subject matter I will do my best to keep the content as light as possible. It is my intention that this be a positive experience for all concerned and will use as much (inappropriate) humor (and misspellings) as possible to lighten this serious situation.

I think that is enough of an introduction, please read the next entry for further details on The life of Barnes.

Please stay tuned and send Sam your thoughts

Cheers

Mark a.k.a. Sarge

Well - good news Sam - it sounds like things are on the mend. Thinking of you on quite a blustery day in Tokyo, Japan. Hope the nurses are treating you well.

It was an awakening of gargantuan proportions this morning when Sam produced his first post operative audible Fart - at precisely 7.05 am - and woke me up from my slumber. To my surprise, the pleasure derived was much as if 'The Fart' had been my own. And as the day has progressed he has gone from strength to stench.
Sam has now had nearly all the tubes removed from his many orifices and has even toddled down the ward corridor several times, managed a couple of McVities digestives (don't tell the nurses), and been outside for some fresh air - boy, did we need it too. Phew, thanks Sarge!
Sam's mum, Ker, is busy making her kiwi version of scouse (look it up if you need to) and is readying herself to bombard him with many and wondrous culinary delights as soon as he is allowed home, which may be very soon.
Sam may resume radiotherapy tomorrow, if he's well enough, and will likely begin chemotherapy after a one week break once the radio is complete.
Sam's bro's, Adam and Tim, are coming over from Finland and OZ and little Sis, Al, is coming up from Wellie next week, to have a big Barnes catch up - it's been so long since we've all been together, so it should be interesting.....so look out!

Hi Sarge
Denise here, from the museum.
Our warm and healing thoughts are constantly with Sam. He is remembered each week in our Team Brief Karakia, and the jungle telegraph here, along with this site, keeps all in touch/aware. Thank you.
If Sam is interested I have a hand held game AND a new RoboSapien that Sam may like to spend time with programming - time distracter.
He need not worry about his contract with the museum - it will still be there for him to pickup/complete when he is up to it. Cover is in the good hands of Mark Hamilton.
Tell Karen to come have a glass of wine and dinner with Min and I sometime soon. Ali's back this weekend I think so no doubt we will catch up with her then.
Love and Warm Fuzzies to Sam this Valentines Day!
Regards
Denise

Hey Sam, Not sure if I'm doing this correctly but shall soon find out I guess - you know what a technophile I am.
Good to hear you're gathering back that strength; must have been the banana cake. Let me know when you need another.
Any news of the "nectar" from Oz yet?
Hope to call in next week before we go away . Love the Technokyd
